This Year (2016) Toronto will celebrate Cavalcade of Lights on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Distillery District Toronto Christmas Market Opens Thursday, November 18, 2016.

It’s official the holiday season is upon us and the City of Toronto is already celebrating. There are a number of events on during the season including the Distillery District Toronto Christmas Market and this past weekend it lit up Nathan Phillips Square with thousands of holiday lights, opened up its public skating arenas and lit up a very large Christmas tree as part of its annual Cavalcade of Lights event. With live musical performances to get the entire crowd into the mood it topped off the night with a spectacular fireworks and laser show.

This year, the 49th annual Cavalcade of Lights in downtown Toronto began with a short Disney on Ice show, some beautiful choir singers and Mayor John Tory lighting the magnificent christmas tree and all the lights around Nathan Phillips Square.

Following the musical performances the crowd was treated to a spectacular fireworks and laser show. I really need to practice shooting fireworks this is not a great representation of the show!

Throughout the night the crowds were able to skate around the Nathan Phillips Square ice rink which is now officially open for the season. A DJ played some tunes to keep the skating party going.

Tips for Attending the Cavalcade of Lights in Toronto

  • Get there early to secure a spot, if you want to be by the ice rink you will need to get their super early, the same if you want a good spot in front of the stage
  • Check the weather forecast and be sure to dress warmly. Mittens are smarter than gloves as your fingers will freeze (that’s my personal lesson from attending this year) quickly.
  • Prepare for crowds the event draws more than 15,000 people into the downtown square
  • You can see the fireworks from just about anywhere in the square you may want to stay on the outer edges of Nathan Phillips Square to avoid the large crowd in the middle
  • When the fireworks ends most of the people tend to start moving towards all the subway stations, be patient the crowded walk through the streets or to the Eaton Centre will be slow-moving as everyone makes their way out
