Sunscreen: Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 50 Review

I love summer, but one of the things I dread about it is having to wear sunscreen, especially on my face. Most sunscreens I’ve tried with a high SPF are thick and sticky, and some even leave a white film on my skin. When I learned about Vichy Idéal Soleil Ultra Light SPF 50 sunscreen, which promises a non-sticky light formula, I just had to test it out.

The Search for the Perfect Sunscreen

As a fair-skinned red-head not wearing sunscreen is not an option for me. Add to this my sensitive skin which reacts to many sunscreens in the form of hives and itchy rashes, and you may start to see my dilemma. In the summer months or on vacations to sunny destinations, I have to wear it every day.

I’ve tried face moisturizers with sunscreen but anything over a 15 SPF, and it felt like I was putting a white clay mask on my face.

Vichy Idéal Soleil Ultra Light SPF 50 Review

The claims of this Vichy face protection sunscreen are:

  • Protects skin from UVA and UVB rays
  • Photostable, the formula doesn’t lose efficiency during sun exposure
  • Tested on sensitive skin
  • Non-sticky
  • Ultra-light lotion
  • No white film
  • Water resistant

The result from my wearing the sunscreen is that Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 50 Sunscreen scores are very high. The light formula claim is true. In fact, the texture of this sunscreen lotion is almost like a serum vs a lotion.

It glides on smoothly and doesn’t feel sticky or leave the feeling of a film or heavy layer on your face.

Not Ideal for Active Outdoor Activities

Where I had a few issues with the Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF face protection sunscreen was on a super hot day when I was out hiking. When I started sweating even before I started the activity, the sunscreen ran into my eyes and did cause a burning feeling. This is a common issue for me with most sensitive skin sunscreens because they don’t make a Sports version of sunscreen. I rinsed out my eyes and I was fine, but there were a few times throughout the day that I had this issue come up.

I still prefer this sunscreen to most I’ve tried despite the sweat factor. It did protect me being out all day in the sun and even with the sweaty activity, and I did not reapply more sunscreen during the day.

Finally a Travel-Friendly Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin

For me finding a sun lotion that is light and great for sensitive skin is fantastic, but I did a happy dance when I realized the bottle is also travelled size friendly. As someone who is trying to fly carry-on only it is tough to find bottles of sunscreen that meet the TSFA’s liquid carry-on restrictions.

The Vichy Idéal Soleil’s bottle holds 40 ml of sunscreen, which with its light serum like formula goes a long way. No more having to check my luggage because my sunscreen bottles are not carry-on friendly.

As I begin my search for travel-friendly, sensitive skin tested, light, non-sticky sunscreens, Vichy’s Idéal Soleil SPF 50 Ultra Light Lotion just raised the bar. This is the first sunscreen I’ve tried in a long time that doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin or feel like I’m wearing a thick mask on my face.
