I’ve never been inside a lighthouse before now. As I’m walking slowly up the second flight of narrow and steep stairs, I realize why. Each flight up is more narrow than the next, and the stairs got steeper like a ladder. I found myself out of breath when I reached the top; then I saw the view. The long red clay beach, waves crashing on the shore and my breathing steadies. The fun part was going back down all those flights of stairs.
West Point Lighthouse Inn and Museum
You don’t have to climb to the top of the lighthouse to get to your room, but you can climb as part of their museum experience which is free for all guests. I recommend the hotel both as a place to stay or a popular road trip stop. See my post: Popular PEI Road Trip Stops to the Beaches of West Point. Those wishing to stop here to view the museum and walk the beach are also welcome for a small fee.
Hotel and Museum Filled with History
This historic property features 13 rooms all with a view of the most beautiful red clay beach along the Northumberland Strait. The newer addition to the historic property features 11 rooms with walkout decks. The Keeper’s Quarters and The Tower Room are located inside the actual lighthouse.
Guests are free to roam through the museum and climb the lighthouse tower right up to the top. Warning the stairs do get steeper and steeper as you go up, but the view is spectacular.
West Point Lighthouse Inn Double Room
I stayed in a double room on the second floor of the Inn’s extension. The room features included:
- Two double beds
- table with two chairs
- wardrobe with three drawers
- toiletries in the bathroom
- flat screen TV
- refrigerator
- walk out deck with patio furniture
There was a basket of toiletries available in the room with basic shampoo/conditioner mix, body lotion and soap.
Great view of the beach and on cool nights like mine I was able to open the windows and sleep to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore. Each room (within the extension part of the hotel) on the second floor has a private deck with two chairs and a small table where you can mellow out and enjoy the view.
On the main floor, there was a quiet sitting room filled with books; there were also some tables and chairs for the continental breakfast available each morning.

Great Sunsets and Long Beach and Boardwalk
My favourite part of this hotel was the fantastic beach that ran for miles in each direction. I walked both in the morning and after dinner to catch the sunsets. We had a cloudy day, so the sun was covered, but I’ve seen some pretty spectacular pictures of the sunset on Instagram.
Dinner at Catch Restaurant
Just up the boardwalk, we headed over to The Catch Restaurant and bar. It is a great place to grab dinner or hang out and have some drinks.
We ordered the mussels for an appetizer (above) and the fried clams and fish tacos featured below.
I loved the casual vibe at the Catch, and the food was delicious. It is just a 2-minute drive from the West Point Lighthouse and accessible if you walk along the boardwalk and road.
If you are planning a road trip to West Point PEI and want to stay an enjoyable historical property with friendly staff and a spectacular beach, you will not be disappointed by the West Point Lighthouse Inn.
